How The Trees Survived
Narrator: Once, in the state of
Oregon, there were many trees. So many trees that you could barely see the sky!
That meant fresh and sweet air to breathe.
In a peaceful forest in Oregon, there
lived a bird named Winter, a squirrel named Robert and a raccoon named Kylie.
Winter: Chirp! Chirp! What a
beautiful day it is!
Robert: Like always! Thanks to these
nice and healthy trees.
Kylie: They give us this sweet air.
The more trees, the more fresh air. The more fresh air, the healthier we get.
(The animal friends continue a happy
conversation. Their voices fade away as they prance happily.)
A couple of years later
Narrator: One gloomy day, the three
animal friends met back up where there used to be full of happy and healthy
trees. Uh oh, they do NOT look happy! Let’s see what happened.
Winter: Did you sleep well last night
I couldn’t
sleep a wink because of this coughing. (Keeps coughing) It is hard to breathe
nowadays.
Robert: Well I can’t stand this hunger. I’m starving. All I can think of is
round and fat acorns. I couldn't sleep at all because of this illusion of yummy
nuts in front of my very eyes.
Kylie: I know I feel so vulnerable
all the time because I have lost my den to hide in.
Winter: We have no food, no home, and
no fresh air because we have lost almost all of the trees!
(All three sigh.)
Winter: By the way, I haven’t seen any of those humans come and
cut down trees for a while.
Robert: Right! I haven’t heard electric saws making that
terrible noise. Do you think they won’t come back?
Kylie: I am sure they won’t come back.
Winter & Robert: How do you know?
Kylie: I knew you became dull and
unable to think as clearly as you used to and I didn’t know you couldn’t see things anymore either.
Winter & Robert: What? Are you
insulting us?
Kylie: Not the least. But look
around. Do you see any trees left? All I see is broken baby trees and leftover
tree stumps. What do you think they will come back for? They have taken all
they wanted from this forest.
Winter: Robert, did you know Kylie
was this smart?
Robert: I guess not. But I know one
thing. This lack of trees has made me dumb. I told you the only thing I could
think of are acorns!
Kylie: Do you think we should start
doing something?
Winter: Something? What something?
Like moving?
Kylie: No! I don’t want to move to anywhere else while
all my family and friends are here.
Robert: Then what kind of something?
Kylie: I don’t know. Maybe we can do something to
have our forest back.
Winter: Having our forest back? How
can we have our forest back when there are barely any trees left?
Kylie: Winter?
Winter: Yes?
Kylie: Robert?
Robert: Yes?
Kylie: I just want you to remember
that you were a smart bird and a smart squirrel. You will think of something if
you focus.
Winter & Robert: We will?
A couple of weeks later
Winter: Robert, Kylie, I’ve got an idea.
Winter: What is it?
Winter: Do you guys like fruits?
Robert and Kylie: OF COURSE!
Winter: Good! My idea is to plant fruit trees
around here.
Kylie: How? We don’t have any fruit seeds to plant!
Winter: Listen, I think I know how. I
saw apple orchards when I was flying by. We’ll pick off some apples and bring them back here. Then, we
can plant them here.
Kylie & Robert: That’s great!
Kylie: Our smart Winter is back! Yay!
Robert: I got another idea! I saw a
forest full of oak trees when I was skittering by. Maybe we can plant those
too! Thanks Winter, you inspired me!
Winter: & Kylie: Great!
Narrator: When Winter, Robert, and
Kylie were busy brainstorming, a bear, a turkey, and an elk were passing by and
just wanted to say hello.
Rainbow the Turkey: Hi friends! What
are you doing here?
Winter, Kylie, and Robert: Hi!
Kylie: We were making a plan to save
the forest! You know, since there are barely any trees left.
Pine the Elk: Oh! So what’s your plan? Is it going well?
Robert: We now thought about getting
acorns and apple seeds to plant here.
Bob the Bear: Oh, I know a place
where there are plenty of berries. Are you interested in planting them?
Kylie, Robert & Winter: OF
COURSE!
Kylie: Wow, now we can plant berries,
acorns, and apples! We’ll
split into three teams.
Winter: Pine, do you want to go with
me to get apple seeds?
Pine: Sure! I hope I don’t eat all the apples! It’s going to be soooooo tempting to eat
those! But I promise I won’t eat the seeds.
Robert: So how about I go with Kylie?
Is that okay?
Kylie: Yeah sure! Finally I can use
my hands for something handy!
Rainbow: Bob, can I PPLLEEAASSEE go
with you?
Bob: Thank you for asking! I would
LOVE it if you came with me! Thank you thank you THANK YOU!!
Winter: Now can we start?
All Animals: YEAH!!!!
Winter: Okay, let’s meet here again tomorrow with
gigantic piles of seeds.
Narrator: All the animals hit the
road to get some seeds for the FUTURE!
The Next Day
Robert: So how did everyone do?
Winter, Rainbow, Bob, Pine, &
Kylie: Good!
Rainbow: It was hard, but we got
POUNDS of berries!
Robert: It was hard for us too,
people stepped and cracked our acorns but we got a LOT!
Pine: It was hard for us three, the
apples kept falling on our heads! But at least some landed in our mouths.
Winter: Are we ready to plant?
All the animals:
YYYYEEEEAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
Narrator: Robert dug, Pine rolled the
seeds, berries, or acorns into the hole, Bob buried the seeds, Kylie stomped on
the dirt, Rainbow went and got more varieties of seeds, and Winter cheered. GO
FRIENDS!! All the animals were so busy.
Rainbow: We’re DONE! I’m soooo tired! But I’m happy!
Bob: I’m wiped out! But I
feel good that we did this.
Pine: I just hope the plants would
grow to stay healthy and strong.
Kylie: I wish we’d get our forest back for fresh air.
Robert: I hope the plants would get
enough rain and full of the warm sunshine.
Winter: I hope the plants would grow
plump fruits, or nuts for our tummies.
Rainbow: If they grow strong, we can
have a better home.
Narrator: All the animals wished,
wished, and wished the plants would grow strongly for all.
A Couple of years later
Robert: Yay! Our idea was a blast!
Ahh, fresh AIR!!!!!!
Kylie: Better HOMES!!
Winter: FOOODDDD!!!!
Bob: MORE FAMILY AND FRIENDS!!!!!!
Rainbow: Guys, remember? The Time we
had planted varieties of seeds. That turned out to be this beautiful, strong,
and healthy paradise.
Pine: Yeah, at that time it was hard,
but now, we’re
happy now. Am I right or am I right?
All the animals: Right!!!!!
Bob: Now, we have to KEEP this forest
healthy.
Rainbow: I hope the humans now know
how trees are very important to our lives.
Robert: Yeah, trees make us healthy
and strong, and wonderful.
Pine: Trees give humans and also us a
better life.
Kylie: I think humans learned their
lesson of why trees are important.
Winter: I think we need to pass this
lesson to our babies so they know how much trees are important to them and for
us.
Robert: Yeah, that’s right. Let’s celebrate this wonderful day!
Narrator: Trees are very important
for animals. They give them shelter, food, and fresh air. Do you know what,
trees give us the same thing. Remember!
The End
